DESCRIPTION:On November 7 and 8\, Toledo will host the Underground Lit Fest\, a two-day celebration of independent literature and poetry featuring writers from across the country alongside Toledo’s own literary voices. Events will take place at The Attic on Adams (1701 Adams Street) and Culture Clash Records (912 Monroe Street). \nThe festival begins Friday\, November 7\, with Welcome to Toledo\, a community kickoff reading hosted by local poet and 2024 “Best Writer in Toledo” winner Dan Denton. The evening includes an open mic and runs from 6–9 p.m. at The Attic on Adams\, setting the stage for a weekend of words and connection. Featured readers are Jonie McIntire\, Sandra Rivers-Gill\, Pella Felton\, Curtis A. Deeter\, Huntor Prey\, and W. Joe Hoppe. \nOn Saturday\, November 8\, the festival continues at Culture Clash Records with a Book Fair from Noon to 2 p.m.\, featuring tables from The Literary Underground\, Swell Magazine\, Toledo Streets Newspaper\, and others. Festival-goers can also enjoy food from Naan Stop Kebap\, a local food truck serving up delicious eats on site from Noon to 7 p.m. \nFrom 2–7 p.m.\, the festival culminates in a featured reading hosted by Pella Felton and Curtis Deeter featuring 26 poets from 15 states\, including Louisiana\, Kentucky\, Ohio\, New York\, Alabama\, Michigan\, Mississippi\, Texas\, Washington\, California\, Illinois\, Pennsylvania\, New Jersey\, Colorado\, and Indiana. \nNotable Toledo voices such as Bob Phillips and Kerry Trautman will be joined by nationally celebrated poets: Bree\, Miles Budimir\, Todd Cirillo\, A.S. DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Memorial Day Ceremony on Saturday\, May 24\, will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the All Wars Memorial\, located off Jackson Street on the Civic Center Mall. The keynote address will be delivered by Brigadier General (Ret.) Christopher J. Dziubek\, U.S. Army. \nGeneral Dziubek retired on November 1\, 2023\, after 33 years of service\, including 17 years on active duty. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1986 with Bravo Battery\, 5/28th Field Artillery in Dayton\, Ohio. In 1989\, he was commissioned as a distinguished military graduate through ROTC and began active duty at Fort Rucker\, Alabama\, where he completed Aviation Officer Basic and Rotary Wing training. He later served as both an Aeroscout and Attack Helicopter Platoon Leader with the 1-101st Aviation Regiment at Fort Campbell\, Kentucky\, and completed the Armor Officer Advanced Course at Fort Knox. \nThe program also includes a wreath-laying ceremony and a special performance by the nationally recognized Springfield High School Junior ROTC and the Springfield High School Band.
